Freakin' Awesome

Watch this.

I won't be able to afford it for years, and I won't get into it until after all the cool kids have gotten tired of it, but I wouldn't mind playing.

That trailer was pretty cool, but I'm wary of such things: how much do the game graphics reflect that aesthetic?

I'd also be interested to know if the "roleplaying" aspect is strengthened over there (as compared to WoW) and how. If it were more conducive to that gameplay, it could be fantastic.

I do like me some Warhammer. And hot dark elf chicks, but that's another story...

Who can resist hot dark elf chicks? Just watch out for the whips...

The guys on Fear the Boot, the gaming podcast I listen to regularly, have really been enjoying Warhammer Online. In fact, the guy on the show who doesn't usually care much about rules (he's very rules-lite and prefers not to do any pre-game preparation as GM) says he likes it a lot more than WoW because it rewards people for doing their own thing. Quests (and their attendant rewards) aren't simply "collect six of these and kill ten of those"; you can be rewarded for just exploring. He mentioned that while WoW does have the occasional "easter egg" for people who go off the beaten track and explore on their own, most of them are kind of tongue-in-cheek inside jokes. In Warhammer Online, they're part of the game world, neat background details that enhance the setting.

In any case, the guy who's notably the most gung-ho about roleplaying and cares the least about game rules really seems to like it.

Still, I'll wait for a while (like I have any choice) and see how long it takes for them to burn out on it... It means I wouldn't be able to join their guild, of course, but oh, well.
